Do You Have a Passion for Fashion and an Eye for Design?

The LeicestHERday Trust is looking for creative students with a passion for fashion and an eye for design to volunteer for the Alice Hawkins Heritage Project. It’s an exciting new project designed to bring stories and experiences to life by connecting the past to the present. You will get the chance to learn about the fascinating stories of local women fighting for their right to vote as part of the suffragette movement here in Leicester, as well as the opportunity to recreate some of the original materials used by those women to campaign for their cause.
THE ROLE
We are looking for enthusiastic young people recreate the banner and sash used by the Leicester suffragettes. There is also the opportunity to recreate some of the clothing worn during that period. Original photographs and newspaper articles with descriptions of the materials are available to help you, as well as Alice Hawkins’ original “Votes for Women” sash that has been passed down through the family for several generations. It’s a great way to learn about the materials, costs and techniques surrounding the original construction in the context of the social history of the period.
THE INDIVIDUAL
Volunteers will need to be artistic, creative and imaginative, have good attention to detail and possess good team working skills. They will need to be able to research thoroughly and have a keen interest in design and local history.
THE BENEFITS
Your work will all be displayed in an exhibition to commemorate the project and photographs will be placed in the City and County Record Office as part of a permanent archive. Photographs of your work will also be placed on the LeicestHERday and Alice Hawkins websites for people to access. The project will also be promoted widely via the Leicester Mercury, BBC Radio Leicester and other local media – so it’s a great chance to get your work seen by a wide audience!
