The Alice Hawkins Project Logo

Are you Aged 16 - 25 and looking for a new and different challenge?

Could you donate some time for a unique and exciting community project?

Fancy yourself as a budding interviewer but never had the chance to practice?

Do you see yourself pursuing a career in radio, journalism, artwork, photography or oral history?

Then the Alice Hawkins Heritage Project is ideal for you!

The LeicestHERday Trust is looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals who enjoy meeting new people to volunteer for the Alice Hawkins Heritage Project. It’s an exciting new project designed to bring stories and experiences to life by connecting the past to the present. You will get the chance to hear about the fascinating personal memories of people within your local community and make them into a lasting and permanent collection of stories. The people you meet will have witnessed and lived through many important events and experiences and with your help we will be able to ensure their stories can be enjoyed by many generations to come.

     THE ROLE

We are looking for young people to interview a variety of women from different backgrounds and cultures about their personal life experiences. Tasks will include preparing, conducting and writing up interviews and visiting women in workplaces, homes and community settings all over Leicester and Leicestershire. Your completed interviews will all be recorded using audio equipment and will go into a lasting collection of stories that will be put into the City and County Record Office, displayed on the project website and promoted via local media and at special events.

THE INDIVIDUAL

Curiosity, energy and enthusiasm -along with good communication skills - are the main requirements you will need to start interviewing people. A genuine interest in people and of issues affecting local communities would be of strong advantage. You don’t need any prior experience as training sessions will be provided. Volunteers will be required to attend a training event but can then volunteer as much time as they would like to contribute and are able.

THE BENEFITS

The project would not be possible without volunteers, so your time will be greatly valued. In return for your time, you will get a superb opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the local community, learn new skills and contribute to a valuable project that will work closely with local people and communities throughout the city and county. It’s a fantastic way to gain some hands on experience and a great way to meet some really interesting people!

Oral History Training session Monday 27th July 9.30-12.30 or Thursday 30th July 1.30pm - 4.30pm At the Adult Education College, Leicester City Centre

This session will be an opportunity for you to learn more about the interview process, and will cover key topics such as how to engage you audience, compose questions and get the most out of your experience.

To BOOK your place or for more details, please contact Amie Smith at the LeicestHERday office on 0116 257 5615, or email amie@leicestherday.org.uk
